University of Minho


Founded in 1973, University of Minho (UMinho) is nowadays one of the most important and prestigious HEI in Portugal. It is renowned for the competence and quality of its faculty and for the level of excellence in research as well as the wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses offered and the remarkable degree of interaction with other institutions and the society in general. UMINHO offers 39 cycle degrees, 13 integrated MSc, around 150 MSc programs and over 50 PhD programs (several international programs involving prestige international partners such as MIT, CMU, Harvard, KUL, etc…) The campus of Gualtar, in Braga, and Azurém, in Guimarães cover a student population of over 19000, plus 1200 teaching staff and almost 800 technical and administration staff making UMinho one of the biggest HEI in Portugal. All our 11 Schools are quite comprehensive and are a reference for their academic and scientific quality at national and international level. All courses and degrees are evaluated and accredited by the correspondent official bodies. Internalization is an institutional priority and it has a long and sound-based experience in participating in several EU programs.


The Institute of Education (IE) is a new teaching and research unit of the University of Minho (UMinho) created in 2009 with the merger of the Institute of Child Studies (IEC) and the Institute of Education and Psychology (IEP), concerning its Educational component. According to its Statutes, IE's mission is to develop projects on education, research (CIEC and CIEd, Research Centers) and interaction with society in the broad area of education, thus contributing to the development and well-being of individuals, groups, education organizations and society.

The teaching activity of IE comprises undergraduate, master and doctoral level of education and training specific to IE or shared with other Schools of UMinho. IE also covers advanced scientific internships, doctorates in partnership with foreign universities and post-doctorates. In conjunction with the teaching activities, research developed in IE is focused on the educational processes, agents and contexts, on teaching, learning, training and socio-educational development. The activities concerning the interaction with society, involve in-service training courses, studies and consultancy, and are a way of making the knowledge and skills of the Institute's professors and researchers available to the community.
